Not your ordinary job…
In fact, we don’t think of it as a job at all. In addition to learning career skills, earning money for college, and serving your country and community, you’ll enjoy adventure and excitement that few, if any, companies can match.
In the Oregon Army National Guard you will get the opportunity to do things that you’ve only seen in the movies. Rappel down a 75-foot tower or, even better, from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Fire a 120mm heat round from the most advanced tank in the world, the M1A2 Abrams. Use Night Vision Goggles (NVG) to clear a building during Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) training.
Your adventure begins shortly after you become a member of the National Guard. You’ll attend our Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP), where you will learn basic Soldier skills that will better prepare you for Basic Combat Training (BCT), or as it’s more commonly known, “Boot Camp”.
BCT will be the most challenging, but rewarding, nine weeks of your life. You’ll be introduced to the Drill Sergeant, and learn basic Soldier skills such as drill and ceremony, marksmanship, map reading, land navigation, combatives, and of course, physical fitness.
The adventure doesn’t end with BCT. You’ll then attend your Advanced Individual Training (AIT), where you’ll learn all about the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) you chose when you joined the Guard. Most of this training is hands-on, practical exercises; giving you both the training and experience you’ll need.
Once you complete your initial training, you may have the opportunity to attend advanced training courses, such as Air Assault and Leadership schools. These schools take adventure and excitement to a whole new level, giving you the chance to do things you probably thought you never could.
If travel is your idea of excitement, Oregon Guard members have conducted training exercises in places such as Oman, Germany, Hawaii, Bangladesh, Mongolia, and Japan. These exercises give Guard members the opportunity to train with multi-national forces and experience cultures from around the world.
As you can see, the Guard is more than just another job. It’s tough and demanding, but will also be one of the most rewarding times in your life. To find out more about the Oregon Army National Guard, Contact Us.
